Owning Up To Poverty in America

 

A university-wide faculty research grants program provided seed money for 10 multi-disciplinary research projects in 2006 and 2007.

• Barriers to Housing and Economic Self-Sufficiency
• Addressing Poverty through Strong Schools and Strong Communities
• Culturally and Linguistically Relevant Health Information for Georgia’s Latinos
• Policies that Pose Obstacles for the Poor in Buying/Owning a Home
• Effective Life Skills Literacy
• Interrupting the Cycle of Poverty through Dropout Prevention
• Financial and Couples Counseling Models for the Poor
• Housing Options for Georgia's Poor Families

An extensive, online research center that includes Census data and comparative analysis of virtually any community in the U.S. about Poverty, Demographics, Population, Housing, Education, Employment and Income (www.poverty.uga.edu/stats/).

Partners for a Prosperous Athens (PPA), a citizen-led collaboration of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, Athens-Clarke County Unified Government, Clarke County School District, local Family Connection Partnership and UGA that is developing comprehensive anti-poverty strategies for the Athens area. Some early examples:

• Initiated an Early Learning Center within the Performance Learning Center.
• Started a Jobs for Life Program, in which local ministers and employers partner to provide job skills and mentoring for unemployed and underemployed.
• Through the Department of Labor, employers and ministers provide opportunities for those with criminal records to re-enter the workforce.
• The Athens Mayor and Board of Commissioners expanded city/county bus hours to help those who rely on public transportation to get to and from their jobs.

Developed a Communities of Opportunity Initiative, beginning with a pilot study in Augusta, to improve community economic development practices in Georgia.
