Intro: A New Compound Targets Weak Link in AIDS Virus Vasu Nair has spent more than 15 years studying the chain of events that allows the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to replicate and cause AIDS. In doing so, the UGA Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in Drug Discovery has found a weak link that he and his team are exploiting as they develop a new treatment for HIV that could actually stop viral reproduction. This weak link is an enzyme called HIV integrase that enables HIV to incorporate its DNA into human DNA. Blocking the action of this enzyme stops HIV replication. “As integrase has no human counterpart and is essential for HIV replication, it’s a superbly attractive drug target for anti-HIV agents,” Nair said. |
